Along with Colvin and Castro and others, Brandon Guyer will be in the spotlight for five games beginning Thursday night, when the Tennessee Smokies travel to Jackson, TN, for a season-ending series with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. The Smokies begin the series alone atop the Southern League’s Northern Division for the second half, with West Tenn and Chattanooga each one game behind.
Guyer was called up to AA from Daytona Monday along with pitcher Jay Jackson. The outfield is full at Tennessee, but the Jaxx are an AL affiliate (Mariners) so the series will have a DH. Guyer replaces Doug Deeds, who was called up to Iowa, where they are one-and-a-half games out in their playoff chase. Daytona fell out of contention in the FSL a few weeks ago.
Guyer played for Ryne Sandberg at Peoria last year, and Sandberg brought him along when he skipped over Daytona to manage Tennessee; but Guyer scuffled in the first half there, and fell back to Daytona. There, he had something of a breakout half-season, hitting .347 in 265 at bats after batting below .270 last season at Boise and Peoria. Guyer seems to have stopped swinging for the fences at Daytona, and had a mere two HRs in those 265 ABs. But he has shown power in the past.
Guyer has stolen 28 bases this year, 23 in 25 attempts while with Daytona.
